PAPIER OCCIDENTAL / WESTERN PAPER

Having long written or drawn on papyrus and parchment, Europe has moved to the paper coming from the Middle East, before inventing its own method of pounding cloth to create sheets by hand. Since the mid-nineteenth century anyway, Western countries have industrialized the production of paper using forests and chemicals, although the old knowledge has survived in artistic activities: there are always mills to make paper by hand, and we find also a production from cotton by special slow machines for high quality paper.

MOYEN ORIENT / MIDDLE EAST

Since the Arabs have learnt from the Chinese the art of making paper, they have adapted to their writing and painting techniques. Nowadays, there is apparently no more production (and if there is we will eventually find it). But before paper, this region of the world had developed the extraordinary support called papyrus.

PAPIERS D'ASIE / ASIAN PAPERS

For over two thousand years, China has been the beacon of calligraphy. Since writing comes from images, painting developed itself in China and Japan with the same tools : hair brushes, raw paper and natural ink. Thus China, Korea, Japan and another portion of Asia (Nepal, Thailand, Bhutan...) could be called a Living Paper Empire. Handmade, sheet after sheet, by entire families of specialized workers, Oriental paper needs only natural fiber and a sort of root juice as raw material. All are different from place to place and suitable for a precise use: calligraphy, painting, printing, deluxe or elegant packaging and any creative handicraft. Our customers generally order some sheets as samples and adore trying them all before deciding which one they prefer and start living with.

LIVRES / BOOKS

Speaking of paper, there are a few useful books suitable. Most of them are in French but this part of our online shop is under construction. Besides, their content is often not available in English and/or their illustrations are unseen.
